Better Branches Regional Tree Restoration Initiative
Saginaw, Michigan
Tree canopies within Bay City and the Saginaw Basin provide less than half the necessary cover for a community in this climate zone. This project is expanding the tree canopy by planting thousands of trees and establishing tree nurseries on vacant properties owned by the Saginaw County Land Bank.
Since the project’s inception, 2,500 trees have been planted. When these 2,500 trees reach full maturity, they will accelerate canopy recovery by replacing older trees and removing 120,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.
-
Fact No. 1
Locally, areas lacking tree canopies tend to be in neighborhoods behind historic redlines.
-
Fact No. 2
We plant trees where residents have been disproportionately affected by tree vacancy.
-
Fact No. 3
To date, over 400 local volunteers have helped us plant trees in the community.
-
Fact No. 4
Every dollar spent on planting and caring for a tree yields benefits two to five times that investment.

Our Goal
We hope this project will help stop the decline of our community tree canopy while succinctly leading to significant canopy expansion. Trees are an incredible resource. Trees help to clean the air; they contribute to positive human health outcomes; they can help provide clean drinking water; they reduce the effects of climate change; and trees provide vital habitat for wildlife. We also hope this project inspires others to act by planting a tree or by supporting our effort to plant thousands more.
